Day one of working parenthood

Hello, stress.

Today I have to do the following (besides getting Sabrina to wear clean underpants):
  1. find the parking lot at the subway station near Sabrina's school
  2. work
  3. enroll Sabrina in aftercare
  4. go grocery shopping (we need bread, milk, moisturizing cream, and I'm not sure what I'm forgetting)
  5. call Sabrina's doctor to ask about her allergies
  6. do laundry
  7. give Sabrina a bath
  8. make a healthy dinner
Not all in that order. Plus we both slept like cr@p last night (I'm mostly blaming my poor sleep on her waking up 6 or 7 times; I really don't know why she had to wake me up at 4:30 when her earring came out).

Today we see how well the "no coke" resolution goes.

Good news!

I can't post about this yet on my non-anonymous blog because it isn't official (darn city human resources department), but I have a job! This is the job that I learned about back in August when I told the would-be boss that my job was being eliminated, and she immediately emailed her boss to ask if she could hire me. Yes, AUGUST. The vacancy was finally posted in November, I applied a week later, and was interviewed last Friday. The 12th, that is. They need me to start ASAP which could actually be on Monday. If HR ever calls me to actually offer me the job.

I will be replacing the only person who has ever held the job. He was in the office since its creation some 35 or 37 years ago.

And (here's the really fun part), I might hold the job for less than a month.

Crazy, huh? The possibility exists that I could get a promotion almost immediately. This is why they need me to start ASAP. One of the (very few) other people in the office just got a new job and is leaving. Imminently. So 1. they need me to start so that he can train me, and 2. his job is better than mine and better suited to my qualifications (it's actually an attorney job), so after he goes, they will want to slide me into his position.

But for now, am just waiting for my phone to ring...

My name is...

...Foster Ima, and I'm a workaholic.

You'd never guess it, I think, from my five months of unemployment. But I started a volunteer position today, and it just confirmed that I suffer from this disease.

I volunteer from 10-2. This schedule allows me to take Sabrina to school, return home, and then go to the office by public transportation, and then do the reverse to pick her up. Because she gets picked up by her social worker on Thursdays and her dad on Fridays, I have a little bit of leeway at the end of the day. So today I arrive (late, oops) and work away until 2 pm. But it just felt "too early" to leave, and I still had work to do. I forced myself to leave at 2:10 so that I don't get in the habit of staying later than I can, but this could be a problem. No one leaves work at 2 pm!
